While my Facebook feed is usually full of cute pictures of my friend’s kids, lately it seems to have been hijacked by well-meaning and self-proclaimed gurus who want me to buy their business secrets.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m all about continued education and business enhancements. But when these gurus don’t offer anything new *and* they don’t understand how a sales funnel is supposed to work, it completely discredits them and their entire business model.

Before we get into what the secret to a successful sales funnel is, let’s first take a step back and define what it is.

A sales funnel is a system or process that you use to guide new leads through the transformation into a paying client.

That’s the simplest, most efficient definition I’ve ever come across for a sales funnel, and it’s 100% true. You don’t have to buy in to these one-size-fits-all sales funnel formulas. Why? Because what you need is a sales funnel that’s specifically tailored to your business, your client’s needs, and your style.

That, right there, is the secret.

The secret to a successful sales funnel is to position your Unique Selling Proposition as the way to solve a problem or meet a need for your clients, build a solid marketing foundation, and systemize the process in a manner that’s true to your brand and voice.

How do you systemize your sales funnel?

That answer is a little bit trickier. You see, the answer is going to be different for everyone. When I’m making chocolate chip cookies, I’ve got a system for how I measure out the cookie dough so it’s a uniform size. My husband has a different process – it involves him and the kids eating the cookie dough. Is either system wrong? Well, not technically. We’re still getting to eat the cookies either way – it just depends on how ‘cooked’ we want them to be at the end.chocolate chip cookie

Your sales funnel and systemization is exactly the same. You need an individualized process in place so that it enhances your USP, rather than just lumping you into that “self-proclaimed guru who’s totally clueless” category (nobody wants to be in that group!).

And speaking of those clueless gurus, thankfully I can just scroll past their ads and get to what I really want to see – pictures of friends, family, and cute kids.
