If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already thought this question a thousand times. You may have even searched a few domain names to see if your dream domain is available. The real question isn’t “is starting a small business for you?” It’s “are you going to take the jump?”
Starting a Small Business
We all dream of creating the next big thing. After all, how cool would it be to start up a company and have it turn into the next Nike or Facebook? Seriously, if you haven’t heard the song “If I Were a Rich Man,” go listen to it now and crawl out from whatever rock it is you’ve been hiding under! We’ve all dreamed of being there. Before you start the next big thing, though, you have to start somewhere, so start small. Starting small is better than not starting at all.
When you’re starting your own small business, you should check out what the laws are for your local area. Do you need a license? (The answer is almost always: YES) You’ll also want to make sure you’re familiar with tax stuff – or at least know somebody who’s super smart in that area. Yes, this is a bunch of boring details. But do you really want to invest a lot of time in creating a company, only to find out that the perfect name has already been trademarked? Oh, and they’re suing you. No, thanks. I’ll spend some time doing research.
Creating a Brand
Let me save you some serious research time: you’ll want to create a brand, not just a company. There are tons of companies in almost every niche: the way to differentiate yours is by adding YOUR personality. Look at that – I just saved you thousands of dollars, or at least hundreds of hours wondering what you could be doing better. (I accept payments in check or chocolate)
As you create your brand, you’ll have to weigh the options: do you go for a catchy, unique name? Or do you go for the simple elegance? Both have their appeals. You can also combine the two: I mean, we went with Admin-Ease, because (hello!) we make your life easier. Get it? Yeah, you’re going to remember our name now!
Taking that First Leap into Business Ownership
As you start the process, you’ll probably experience a wide variety of emotions. Everything from: “What did I just do?” to “Oh man, I can’t believe I waited this long! I should’ve done this years ago!” and everything in between. Getting things set up is just the first step: building your website, adding in some snappy text, finding great photos, setting up those pesky social media accounts (we promise: they aren’t pesky! They are necessary), and listing your first products or services.
Once things are set up, you’re ready to take the leap into the great, online world of business. Welcome to the club!
