instagram foodIf you haven’t been on Instagram lately, you’re really missing out. It’s a *huge* social media platform that’s only continuing to grow. It’s especially popular with those of us who prefer strong visuals and beautiful images. Yes, there’s an inordinate amount of “here’s what I’m eating for dinner!” posts and about a bazillion Instagram hashtags to search. But there’s also some amazing interactions going on – for business.

Here’s why you NEED to be on Instagram

It’s more than just because Instagram has more than 300 **MILLION** active monthly users. But that’s a huge part of it. After all, 300 million users is a huge, awesome audience to tap into!

Instagram is also one of the best ways to humanize your business. How? Well, show what it’s like behind the scenes. Show what it’s like when your team is goofing off during a meeting after lunch. Show off your company’s softball team. Or snap and share a picture of your dinner. We aren’t judging. (Hey, I’ve done it, too!)

But seriously, you need to be on Instagram. Once you’re there, you’re going to want to tap into the power of the Instagram hashtags.

Instagram hashtags are NOT the same as other hashtags

You’re probably familiar with the hashtags from Twitter and Facebook, right? Well, because Instagram doesn’t have the same 140 character limit that Twitter does (although that’s soon going to be a thing of the past!), the hashtags are lots longer. In fact, they serve a different purpose.

While Twitter hashtags help you find causes or events, Instagram hashtags are designed to be more descriptive in nature. Yes, they still use the shorter tags to help people find their events and causes. But they also aren’t afraid to cram a whole sentence into a hashtag.

Now, while I haven’t used that *exact* string of hashtags in any of my own Instagram posts, I’m totally tempted to now! The point, though, is to use the hashtags to help tell your story. Use them and have fun with them.

#Because you’re going to want to have at least this many hashtags per post

The magic number for Instagram hashtags is 11. Yup. 11. You’re going to want 11 hashtags per post. Posts with fewer hashtags get shared, but they don’t see as much exposure as those that have 11. On the other hand, if you really want to hashtag it up and somehow end up with 25, you’re going to see a lot less interactions than if you’d listened to that inner voice that said, “hey, so 25 is like 14 too many! #timetoedit”

All kidding aside, we totally recommend Instagram for your business. It’s more than just a great place to see what your neighbor ate for dinner or how cute their kids are now. It’s also a premiere platform for using amazing visuals to connect with your audience.
