As a mom, you’ve better believe I’ve got some serious management skills. Granted, we’re still working on the whole disconnect between what I say and what my small children think I’m saying. But that’s a work in progress, right? And while it may take a few years for my kids to finally understand this whole home management process, there are a few tricks you can use to make managing a virtual team successful today.

When managing a virtual team, send a clear message and set expectations

image16First and foremost, you’ve got to have everyone on the same page. Because if there’s too much room for interpretation, that’s why Murphy really likes to strike.

In other words, you’re going to need a fantastic on-boarding system to get everyone up to speed from the get-go. Then, you’re going to want to use some sort of project management system that assigns tasks, deadlines, and facilitates communication – something that helps your team absolutely rock their jobs.

Beyond that, though you’re going to need regular meetings.

Be sure to set up weekly accountability meetings

business woman2When you’re managing a virtual team, you’ll want to have weekly meetings to make sure that everyone is keeping up on tasks, understands their roles, and isn’t running into any small problems (before Murphy makes them BIG problems).

For some virtual teams that work with multiple businesses, the entire team may have regular meetings with the entire business organization. In other instances, only the virtual manager will attend meetings with their business associates. The virtual team manager and the team, however, will have regular meetings to discuss their tasks and/or their business associates’ needs.

And foster an education-based environment

The last real trick to managing a virtual team is to build an education-based environment. When your team knows the value of continued education and actively pursues it, it makes them even better. Not only will they become industry experts faster, they’ll also stay there. Oh, and they’ll probably become experts in several fields.
